The Winning Names Are…

web picIf you were at the market last Saturday you may have entered the contest we held to name the two cute babies we brought with us.  Even with the extremely cold and soggy conditions we had two pages of name suggestions!  A special thanks to Steve for helping to babysit our wards and being such a good neighbor and to a lovely lady that held one under her jacket for warmth at the height of the storm (I held the other):) 

Some of the names were quite funny and even telling of those that suggested of them like “Guiness” and “Tequila”.  Other names were based on color patterns like “Tuxedo” and “Butterscotch”.  One of our favorite customers is quite in to art and suggested “Mona” and “Lisa” for the two girls!

Two adorable young ladies nominated their own names “Sophie” and “Ruby”. Sophie pointed at her favorite little kid goat and told her solemnly that her name would be Sophie.  The kid wagged her tail at that exact moment and it was taken as a favorable sign.

We promised to cut the names apart and throw them in a hat for random drawing.  We did even though the paper and ink were rather squishy!  Since there are over 30 babies now we will save the other names for them so everyone will be a winner:)

So here we are…drum roll…perhaps hoof beats?

Now I hope that doesn’t mean that they will be predisposed to jumping off of tall heights or attempting to scale large crevices…

Just Kidding–No Seriously we are Kidding!

Here is one of the first arrivals on Tuesday night.  We had 7 new kids Tuesday and 7 more on Weds.  Keep checking and you will see more I am sure!  We are very happy that Jimmie is home to act as an OBGYN!  He calls me if anything looks amiss.  WE only have had one breach birth to assist and everyone is doing just fine on their own!  How lucky is that? 

The top picture is our farm mascot “Bubbles” and her first kid.  She had an easy labor and is a super Nanny. We had hoped that she would have a baby marked with her bubbles but as you can see the baby is a solid color.  If you know some cool names for kids that you would like to send us we would appreciate it!
The second picture is of Holly and her new baby which is practically her clone in pattern and color.  Holly was born on Christmas a few years back and her daughter Ivy is due any minute.  Maybe a plant or Christmas type name for this part of the family to name the baby?

This picture is of Assaba’s daughter–she is one of our foundation nannies granddaughters.  Her name is Dot Com and she is out of E-bay.  What do you think would be a good name for this little one?  Please don’t say “Vista” or anything to do with microsoft.  (We aren’t too excited about their latest projects although the commercials with Mac vs PC have been entertaining!)

You might wonder how we and the mommies/nannies keep all of these babies straight?  How come they don’t mix them up?  It is all in how they smell and sound (nope–we don’t sniff them we just watch which mom they end up with).  Each mother bonds at birth based on smell.  Within a very short time they know the sound of their kids too.  Sounds like bedlam to the rest of the farm but is music to these very long eared nannies.

Notice the white mustache on the nanny in this picture?  Her name is “Got Milk”.  Her baby is black with white accents.  Suggest a dairy product name for her perhaps?

We will pick names from the suggestions made electronically and from the markets we sell our cheese at.

Back to the barn for now!  Kids keep popping!!!

Currently our cheeses are at the Central Phoenix Public Market every Saturday and Weds., sold at select Briar Patch Sales, Litchfield Organics every Weds., and at the Glendale Farmer Market.  We also feature our goat milk soap, hand creams, and soaks and bath salts.

Our Cheeses are fresh and feature all natural and/or organic herbs and materials grown on our farm as much as possible..  The milk has no hormones or additives.  Milk is pasturized and then cultures featuring creamorius, bulgarus, acidophillus, and others are added to make the correct cheese type and add back in all of the goodies mother nature intended for our intestinal tracts!  We do not have a strong goat taste or gaminess to our cheese.  My husband always says,”Taste the Cheese–not the Goat”!

 

Recipe of the Week–Pineapple Habanero Feta Dip

Many of you are getting back to watching sporting events or your favorite new season of shows and you get the munchies!  Try this!  It will wake up your taste buds and then some!

Ingredients:

4 oz Barn Goddess Goat Feta Cheese

Two to four tablespoons of Pineapple Habenero Salsa by Gage the Heat LLC

1/4 cup mayonaise

Procedure:

Place all ingredients in the food processor and blend well.  Serve with crackers or tortilla chips.

Warning:  Bubbles thinks this is pretty hot.  She has more than one stomach so she aught to know!  Bubbles suggests that you add more cheese and some fresh pineapple if you want to cool the temp. down a little!

Curds and Whey

Here are some beautiful Barn Goddess Goat Cheese Curds just prior to draining the whey from the pan.  We use the high protein whey to make brine for the feta cheese.  Currently we offer the following varieties of cheese:

Jalapeno, Fiesta, Cajun, Feta, Marinated Chipotle, Marinated Rosemary and Garlic, Goat Cheese Buttons stuffed with nuts and glazed with White Wine, Garlic and Spinach, Sun Dried Tomato, Plain Fromage, French Imported Herb, Cranberry Pecan.

This fall we will offer Cheese Fudge, Key Lime Goat Cheese, and Shrimp Cocktail Delight.

Recipe of the Week Marinated Goat Cheese Chipotle Salsa

Marinated Goat Cheese Chipotle Salsa

Ingredients:

4 oz of Marinated Chipotle Barn Goddess Cheese

1/2 cup cooked, drained black beans

2 green onions chopped fine

1 large tomato chopped fine

3 cloves of garlic chopped fine

1/2 cup fresh corn kernels

juice of two limes

Procedure:

Throw everything in a bowl and stir.  Doesn’t get easier than that!  Serve on a bed of lettuce with fresh tortilla chips, crackers, or rolled up in a wrap.  I was going to post a picture but Jimmie ate it all!

Season of Soap

During the summer Celia makes tons of soap during the heat of the day after working out with the animals until 11:00 am or so. One of our first products to make on the farm was Goat Milk Soap.  Our family has allergies to fragrances and dyes in many commercial projects so it started out as an experiment when we realized we had lots of goat milk and couldn’t drink it all!  Now, 16 years later, it is one of our most popular products and has been shipped all over the world.  Clients with skin conditions order whole lots and we put in herbs and spices, flowers and other medicinal herbal blends.  All scents are derived from essential oils so that reactions to the skin would only occur if the person is allergic to the actual plant used.

These bars have just emerged from the molds and will cure for 4 to 6 weeks before they will be labeled, gift wrapped and made ready for sale. Only then can they be endorsed by Bubbles!

If you live on a ranch and have great cool evenings with lots of light like we do right now dinner is later than usual and time gets short for cooking and planning meals.  Bubbles and all of her friends need lots of grooming these days and we are almost ready to kid and foal!

Sometime we just want something quick to go with a nice salad.  Give this a try!

Ingredients:

 Flat bread of your choice or pre-made pizza dough

olive oil

italian herbs

2 cloves garlic (Tonopah Rob’s fresh green garlic is awesome)

several ripe tomatoes washed and cubed

1 small onion washed and chopped

4 oz of plain or feta Barn Goddess Goat Cheese

Procedure:

Brush bread with olive oil

Mix all of the produce in a blender or food processor to make a sauce

Spread your sauce on the bread and top with goat cheese

(optional:  throw on your favorite olives, pineapple, peppers, etc…)

Broil until the cheese is golden brown.  Enjoy it on your porch or patio since we know this desert is going to heat up soon!
