Recipe of the Week Deep Fried Goat Cheese on a Stick

Yup!  Sounds very weird and unhealthy indeed.  This is a recipe in honor of the upcoming County Fair and all of the fried food lovers out there.  Also, it was a personal challenge when a friend dared me to try doing this! If you can put a twinkie on  a stick…Tastes great if eaten in moderation (the cheese–not the twinkie)…

Ingredients:

4 ounces of Barn Goddess Goat Cheese Feta

1/4 cup of flour

1 pinch of cayenne chili powder

1 pinch of salt

1 bottle of dark beer ( I like a beer you can barely see through)

Oil for deep frying

Sticks/skewers

Procedure:

Drain and pat the feta with papertowels

mix the dry ingredients and then slowly add a little of the beer at a time until you have a batter similiar to muffin dough or tempura batter

When the oil is very hot–test by dropping a little batter in the oil and it is hot enough if the batter floats up to the top quickly–dunk the cheese in the batter and then put the stick through it

Using the stick as a handle submerge the cheese in the oil until the batter is golden brown ( a minute or so)

Set on a paper towel and repeat until all the cheese is fried.

Enjoy your cheesy treats with the rest of the beer!  It is not good to waste the rest of the beer.  Just ask Bubbles!

Spoiled Rotten Weenies–Gotta Love It!

Meet Maverick and Aspen.  They live in California with the Culp family.  We just got an update on their life with the Culps and all is going super well.  As you can see they are taking it easy and lounging about as a Weenie should!  They make their parents Der Venershcnitzel and Vienna Sausage very happy.  Thank you to Debbie Culp for the pictures and for making such a good home for the two doxies!

Kindness Abounds in Tonopah

It had been a rough week.  We were exhilarated by a huge account that we had gained with our Barn Goddess Cheese, and saddened by the news that one of the closest relatives in our world is seriously ill.  Saturday was the 4th anniversary of the Downtown Phoenix Market and we geared up for this as well.

The market was great and a lovely lady named Gloria, whom had been speaking with us via e-mail, came by and arranged to come out and see our critters on Sunday with her son Zack.  She wanted to buy a red laying hen.  Turns out she is Cuban and so is 1/2 of our family so we hit it off big time!

After the market we are usually exhausted and as big as this one was we were especially pooped out!  We decided to take a nap.

15 minutes into the nap we got a call that our dachsunds were off of the porch and running down the dirt road in front of our property.  Of course we dashed out there to call them in.  Much to our dismay Robin was missing from roll call.

Robin is deaf and only sees from one eye.  He has never left the house and the porch since we are so afraid he could get hurt.  A myriad of potential disasters went through our heads as we combed the desert and went to each little farm in our area to ask the neighbors to be on the look out.  It got      too dark to see so we went home.  Neither of us slept that night worried about what could happen.

The next day came and still no Robin.  That afternoon with Gloria and Zack on the way a car pulling a hotdog vending cart pulled into our driveway.  I recognized the lady in the front seat. Years ago she had a sick foal and I lent her medical supplies I had on hand.  None of us out here are well to do so we help our neighbors when we can. I hadn’t heard from her since then. I was suprised to see her.

Roxanne and her husband Tony asked if I was missing a dog.  I described him hurridly.  They looked at each other when I informed him that he was deaf.  They said that explained his behaviour and that I should follow them home since they had him!

Seems that Robin had been attacked by something and had sprinted several miles away from home.  A nice man named Link, whom we have yet to find and thank, took him in for the night.  Link is a vendor at a park and swap locally and he took Robin with him hoping that someone might know his owner. Barb (another neighbor I hadn’t seen since the sick foal incident) referred him to Roxanne and Tony.  Roxanne had seen Robin’s mom and guessed he might be ours.  She took him home and then came to get us!

Robin is so excited to be back with his family!  We are overwhelmed by the kindness of these neighbors and their actions to reunite us with our puppy Robin.

As if the day couldn’t get any better in it’s ending, Gloria and Zack brought us Cuban pastries like the goodies we get when we visit our daughters in Florida and stayed to visit for awhile.  Zack adopted one of our little golden tom cats.

There really are angels among us and some of them live in Tonopah!! Thanks to the Cuban angel that brightened our day with goodies too!  Good luck to Zack with his new furry friend.
