Rainy Daze at the Farm

rainy daze pic

Rainy Days!  My sis wanted to lend me and the sheep dog, Enya, a kayak to go out and feed the critters!  We have had a lot of rain as all the mud in this picture can testify to (No, the floor doesn’t have brown spots in the linoleum pattern). The winds blew so hard that we had an awning come down in the goat pasture!  The little darlings are just fine though huddled in their sheds.  I think everyone had to chase their food in the winds that made it hard to keep the truck door open or closed as we came around for an overall welfare check during the height of the storms.

Dad Cameron, my step dad gave me this wild coat.  He bought it in Northern Scotland.  It has reflector tape and a whistle, and it becomes a floatation device if you should fall into the North Sea.  No danger of the sea but I think we may qualify for lake front property.  Instead of chilies perhaps we should stock a trout pond?  Trade the shepherd’s crook in for a paddle for the kayak?

Can’t cry too much though about the weather since it will make the pastures luxurious for the  spring kids on the way.

Recipe for January Dieters–Cheesy Lettuce Wraps

On a diet for your resolution?  Remember that goat cheese is 30% less fat!  Try this recipe to liven up the diet menu:

Ingredients:

Crisp Lettuce Leaves-Large and washed and dry

4 oz of Barn Goddess Chipotle Marinated Goat Cheese

1 cup of asparagus spears cut in 3 inch lengths

1 bunch of green onions chopped in 3 inch lengths

1 egg beaten

1/4 cup sliced almonds

salt to taste

Procedure:

Drain oil from cheese into a wok or fry pan and heat until sizzling.

Add the nuts and veggies and stir fry until just a little tender (2 minutes or so) and almonds turn toasty golden.

Add the egg and cheese and continue to stir fry until the egg is cooked.

Remove from heat and scoop spoonfuls onto the lettuce leaves.  Serve with your favorite hot sauce if you like it spicier.

Happy New Year from the Farm

sheep in snow

The beautiful sheep in this picture live in the northern part of the state and as soon as roads are passable we hope to purchase one of the rams to attend to our ladies Morticia and Cousin It.  We are kind of partial to the one in the center that appears to be posing for us!  We tried to show the picture to the girls to see if they had any preference but their room mate, Dribbles the goat, ate the picture.  Guess we will just suprise them:)

joseph in the snow

Some of our customers asked why we didn’t attend the Farmer’s Markets the Saturday after Christmas.  Here is why! This is Joseph our grandson.  He came to visit us over the holidays from Southern Florida and wanted snow for Christmas.  We took him to Munds Park and you can see he got his wish.  We hope our customers can understand our absence.

At least 18 goats are pregnant presently and due the end of this month into Febr.  Emily, our Goddess of Sales is going to try and install a streaming web cam so everyone can watch them play.  Baby goats bounce around like popcorn and can be very entertaining.

Estrella, Princess, and Foxy will foal this spring.  They usually have multi-colored foals that are well recieved by the equestrian community.  We imprint them at birth.  This requires that we sleep with an egg timer and roll over and stare at the tv monitor every hour to check for changes in the mares.  We have a camera wired in the barn that broadcasts into the  house in our bedroom.  No one gets much sleep in March.  We hope that the birds that nested in the barn stay out of the camera this year.  It is very unsettling to see a beady eye staring back at you in the middle of the night when one of them is sitting on the camera and peering in!

Fresh From the Goddess is going great with the gluten free branch of the farm biz and has recently invented several vegan gluten free goodies and the latest flavor of biscotti–Mango and White Chocolate.  Joseph brought mangos with him from Florida for his grandma and we like to share our good fortune:)

We hope the New Year will bring peace and health to all of you and that you will stop by and see us!
